Fukuoka City has an area of about 338 km2. Canal City Hakata
This is a commercial complex that is home to the Fukuoka City Theater, United Cinemas, a Food Theme Park and a wide variety of specialty shops. Canal City Hakata is built around an artificial canal that flows through its center.

Kyushu National Museum
Kyushu National Museum is located in Dazaifu-shi, Fukuoka, and is the country’s fourth National Museum after those in Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara. The concept is “Understand Japanese culture from the point of Asian view.” Kyushu National Museum is located next to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
Dazaifu Tenmangu is a shrine built to honor Michizane Sugawara He was a distinguished politician and scholar in Heian period. Sugawara is worshipped as the god of academics. This shrine has a really beautiful view with 6,000 plum trees planted for Sugawara who loved plum blossoms. The plum blossoms attract a lot of people every year.

Kushida Shrine (Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival)
During the festival period, gorgeous floats decorated with beautiful dolls are set up with in various places throughout the city. The climax of the festival is the Oiyama race. Several hundred men carry the floats through the city. The place to start Oiyama race is Kushida shrine. This festival gathers a large audience from not only Fukuoka prefecture, but also other prefecture.
